#IN-ARTIF-1

Type: Greenbrier

Age: 9,500 B.P. - 9,000 B.P.

Measurements L. 3-7/8"  W. 1-1/2"

Material:  Brown Dover Chert

Provenance: Tennessee River, Benton Co. Tennessee

Comments: A fine, large example of this early type.  Spectrographic comparison of this point with a Pinetree point (8,000 B.P.) from near the Pinetree type site shows that the Greenbrier type precedes the Pinetree in time.  The Greenbrier point pictured here is an authentic artifact of the Early Archaic Period.  Heavy Tennessee River stain with muscle shell eggs still attached.  This appears to be a first stage Greenbriar with only the first sharpening.  The fine edge work is top notch.  A VERY VERY THIN piece.

Tom Davis C.O.A. included, #49873, dated 6/4/07.  He graded it a "10".

BRECKINRIDGE CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY, Certificate # 1417 dated 12/22/08

Type:  Big Sandy

Age: 10,000 B.P. - 9,000 B.P.

Measurements: L. 2-15/16"  W. 1-1/16"

Material:  Fort Payne Chert

Provenance: East Tennessee.  Ex Rocky Hall

Comments:  This Big Sandy is in very good condition, and exhibits the Leighton base.  The Leighton base from which this one gets its name actually has extra notches in the base below the normal notches.  A dandy! Side notched points were made from 10,000 B.P. to the late Prehistoric, and are often lumped into very arbitrary subgroups.  Spectrographic dating indicates this point was made in the Early Archaic.  More side notched forms are reported from the Early and Middle Archaic than any other eras.

Tom Davis C.O.A. included, #52759  He graded it a "9".

Type:  Clovis (Hazel)

Age:  11,200 B.P. - 10,700 B.P.

Measurements:  L. 2-15/16"  W. 1"

Material:  Camden Chert,

Provenance:  Found by John Trout in the Tennessee River, Humphreys Co., Tennessee

Comments:  A nice full example of this scarce type.  These points were used about as often as knives as they were projectiles, and the side wear on this example is very diagnostic of the Clovis type.  The well defined waist and excurvate upper blade edges are characteristic of the Hazel Clovis sub-type.  Color is river-stained brown.  Has short flutes on both sides.  Because the hafting area is ground very smooth for more than one inch up each side, this one resembles a Clovis-Hazel.

Tom Davis C.O.A. included, #51382.  He graded it a "7".

Type:  Indian point.

Age:  9,500 B.P. - 8,500 B.P.

Measurements:  L. 4"  W. 3/4"  H. 1-5/8"

Type:  Early Archaic Knife Form

Age:  9,500 B.P. - 9,000 B.P.

Measurements: L. 4-3/4"  W. 1-5/8"

Material:  Burlington Chert

Provenance:  from the Kirk Leavesley Collection; found in Missouri

Comments: This Early Archaic Knife also served as a preform for a point.  Many large early forms were left with the base unfinished as a first stage.  The shafts were all slightly different sizes, being hand made of natural materials.  The base had to be a close fit to function well, so finishing the base was done when the intended use was at hand, insuring that the point could be used on any shaft.  It could be used in hand as a knife until that time.  This is likely a Dovetail.

Paleo Cumberland Spearhead "Heartbreaker".  What I believe to be a Cumberland out.  This is a super nice example of workmanship, either anciently broken or may have been used as it was.  It is 2-7/8" long, and 1" wide.  Very thin, and well made out of tan flint found in Tennessee.  This artifact has grinding up both sides indicating that it is indeed a Paleo spearhead.
