WORLD TRAVEL

This trip occurred because we sold our pair of fossil cave bear skeletons to a collector in Melbourne, Australia in September.  We crated and shipped the bears ahead, then flew there in October and put them back together for him at no charge.  He kindly put us up in a private apartment in Melbourne for a week, then flew us to Tasmania, down to Bruny Island where he owns extensive property.  We stayed in his lodge there for several days while we were shown around the island to see his various properties - amazing.  Then we had use of a van for as long as we wanted to see Bruny Island and Tasmania before we flew back to Melbourne and continued our trip.  What an experience.

BON VOYAGE PARTY
FOR THE CAVE BEARS
We invited friends and service people who knew about the bears to come and give them a proper send-off.

Here's Glenn with Mr. Cave Bear downstairs

Here's friend Ronnie's two kids with Mrs. Cave Bear upstairs, one last time.

All in!
Seal him up, Earl!
Out the door, need lots of help!  Renee is bringing up the back.
Across the lawn to the storage building to await Fedex.  The look on Dale's face is hilarious.
What a big empty space we now have!
DISASSEMBLING MRS. CAVE BEAR
Off with her head!
Ronnie's got an arm!

Working on her other arm
Torso!
Just the lower half left
Her head is waiting patiently
As are her arms, waiting

All sealed up
Into the cameo building for address, and wait for Fedex
On the Fedex truck heading to the airport, ultimate destination: Melbourne, Australia!

OCTOBER 10, 2016

Our starting luggage.  We would mail more and more back home till we
traveled very lightly at the end.

Flight from Spartanburg SC to Chicago IL.  Here's Glenn next to a large Brontosaurus replica in the Chicago airport, and on the plane to LA.  A rare smile.

Then to Los Angeles CA, then to Melbourne, Vic, Australia.  Here's the monitor on the flight from LA to Melbourne.

It was a long flight.  We were glad we didn't pay for first class.  There was a family with 4 girls that sat in the front of the coach section and took turns crying during the entire flight, just a curtain separating them from first class.
Landed in Melbourne, rented a car and headed towards the client's house.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA
October 13-14, 2017
This was an art installation over the road on the Melbourne freeway, and an interesting pergola type of cover over one section

A LOT of construction going on in downtown Melbourne, a Ferris wheel, and a fascinating avant-garde building design

Beautiful old church, Melbourne.  The sale-and-pepper roof was unusual.  Speaking of churches, here was one that notably welcomed migrants.  Kudos!

First day in the private apartment provided by our client, downtown Melbourne.  There was a Food Court across the street, re-defined by us as a Gourmet Food Court.  We were in heaven.

MORE ON THE FOOD COURT
Look and drool.  Pastries, toasties, hot dog croissants, and salads galore.

Chinatown in Melbourne, beautiful entry gate

"Shark Fin Inn" in Chinatown, Melbourne.  We did not go inside to see, but we guessed they would have shark fin soup on the menu.  We would not eat there just because of that.  Beautiful and exotic flowers nearby.

GREAT OCEAN ROAD,
SOUTH of MELBOURNE to the 12 APOSTLES ISLANDS
10/15/17
The Ocean Road from Melbourne, south to the Southern Ocean and then west to the 12 Apostles was so beautiful.  Red craggy cliffs, blue waters and lighthouses.

Bathers in the ocean, huge trees and unusual waxy flowers by the side of the road.  All in all, spectacular.

We stopped at a lookout point to enjoy the view.  Another tourist took our photo.  A rare photographed laugh on Glenn's face

APOLLO BAY
Cafe 153 on the Ocean, stopped for lunch, with a great menu of choices.

There was a beautiful park across from the cafe, closer to the ocean.  Flower similar yet different from what we know.

Wave art was cool, advertising the Great Ocean Walk here at Apollo Bay

Wood art installations throughout the pathways of the park, octopus arms, faces, platypus, whales and other animal forms gracefully carved in totems.

Even the base of the graceful bench was carved full of whales

Continuing on the Ocean Road, sheep and cow farms nestled into valleys

The rugged cliffs at the edge of the Southern Ocean just to our left, all along the way

APOSTLE ISLANDS
10/15/19

We flew on the helicopter over the Apostle Islands with "12 Apostle Helicopters".  Great service!

Readying for take-off in the helicopter.  So exciting.  First aerial view.

The view is simply amazing.

Sweeping views of the islands and the countryside and town and ocean.

There used to be a stone bridge that has since fallen in.  They are deterioraating over the years

Heading back to the helicopter pad

Last views, a flight of a lifetime.

Glenn coming back from an identical trip in the "black helicopter"

Our first view of a flock of cockatoos and Galah parakeets, and a black and white magpie with their distinctive "caw" sound
