Petrified Stump & roots on display at the Smithsonian Museum in
Washington DC

Arizona. Superior two-piece set of BLACK petrified wood limbs that fit together as part of the same stump, one side of each is polished. Glenn's favorite. Measures 7" in diameter x 2 1/4" thick on one, 3" thick on the other, x 4 1/2" tall; 5 3/4 pounds on one, 6 1/2 pounds on the other. Not for sale.
This property is adjacent to the famous Petrified Forest in Arizona. You can see the plentiful supply of petrified wood from this area - there's a lovely two-mile drive where you can see whole trees (petrified) - it was explained to us that the petrified wood deposits extended over 200 feet underground in this area.
What makes petrified wood those beautiful colors? Here's a great chart to identify the minerals that have been absorbed by a particular piece of wood as it petrified/fossilized!
