Siberian Woolly Mammoth
RARE!
(Mammuthus primigenius)
Age:
Late Pleistocene, 150,000 to 10,000 years,
meaning the tusk ivory is MINERALIZED (meaning it is in the process of
fossilizing, but feels and cuts like modern ivory).
This animal is known from
bones and frozen carcasses from northern North America and northern
Eurasia with the best preserved carcasses in Siberia. They are perhaps
the most well known species of mammoth.
This mammoth species was
first recorded in (possibly 150,000 years old) deposits of the 2nd last
glaciation in Eurasia.
They were derived from steppe mammoths (Mammuthus
trogontherii).
It disappeared from most of
its range at the end of the Pleistocene era (10,000 years ago), with a
dwarfed race still living on Wrangel Island until roughly 1700 B.C
There will be no more
Siberian Mammoth material coming out of Russia.
That makes these specimens much more rare, as
time goes on.
Existing specimens will be trading hands from
collections, rather than more material excavated and sold.
The natural BLUE color is particularly
collectible.
