CHARLOTTE’S GOURDS

We have been buying her artistic gourds for many years now. Her gourds are homegrown and hand crafted. She displayed her gourds for sale at various gourd shows in the California art & crafts venues. She has won numerous awards and ribbons for her superlative and detailed work. Charlotte and Bruce worked together for years up in an airplane doing topographical photography work from the belly of the plane.

She is now retired. Here are some of her last pieces we are offering for sale.

Below that, we will display the gourds we have purchased from her as other examples of her work.

Charlotte explains:

Gourd garden: The fact that we grew the gourds ourselves helped control their quality. Being able to tend our garden rather than a large crop field, it was not only easy, it was enjoyable. Not to mention very relaxing and peaceful. Bruce and I spent many summer evenings in the gourd garden tending to the plants – watering, pinching bugs, you name it. We called it “peacefully grooming the kids and making loving memories to revisit years in the future. They are the happiest memories of my life, all those years Bruce and I shared.

I have given away more gourd and driftwood items than I ever sold. It was only when I discovered gourds and what all could be done to them besides eating. Then I discovered woodburning at the first October Gourd Festival I went to with Bruce. He kept saying “you can do that” at each booth. He bought my first very nice wood burning tools, even though I wasn’t sure if I knew what to do with it. So I signed up for a class and the “Topographic map maker” Draftsman in me took over. I ended up teaching what I had learned to others. That I am proud of. I tend to get shy about that and called it “sharing”. It got easier after awhile and did end up fairly good at teaching others what I learned.

The time we spent in our home and in our vegetable garden gave us a place to grow decorative gourds. It was my only true Home and the time spent there was longer than any other. We had a Cessna 185 Sky Wagon High wing Tail Dragger for our career of topo mapping. My job was back of the pilot seat, running a humongous mapping camera.

Leaf design around bottom edge, start of neck in oranges, greens and yellows. Hatchwork design on the neck, balloon design around the top edge in orange. Two leopard stripes around the base of neck and halfway up.
