Carved by Native Artist Roland Alowa (Savoonga, St Lawrence Island, Alaska).  He is deceased.  Purchased from him approx. 2002-2004.  Tooth came from a dead beached orca.  Yup'ik do not hunt orca.  This is a rare item because of this.  Initials "RA" carved on back end of underside

Measures 6-1/4" long x 2-1/8" wide x 1-3/8" thick.  Weight: 13.7 ounces.

Scene of Eskimo and his sled load lashing his whip at 3 sled dogs, snow underfoot.  A plug of ivory has been removed and carved smooth and inked with designs, and re-inserted as the Moon overhead.  

Tooth was shaved flat on the back, as it sets on its back.  Signed: "Nuguruk" which is the name of a Seattle company in the 1960's, under whose name various scrimshaw artists worked.

This is a walrus tusk carved into a totem of seals, whales and walrus. The top base is made from a juvenile fossil walrus skull. 
The lower base is an oozeva (fossil vertebrae disk that goes between the verts). 
It measures 19” tall from the table (linear); 24” from the table, following the curvature; 
1-3/8” widest point for the totem itself; 
the juvenile skull measures 5-1/4 x 5-1/4 x 2-3/4”. 
The oozeva measures 5-1/2” diameter. 
The tusk is removable from the skull base. 
The totem itself measures 20-1/2” long. 
It actually fits into the base either way.

Two smaller, one larger vase or box, each with a lid.  Lids are bowhead whale baleen.  Dark brown vases are mastodon ivory, white is walrus ivory. Red cedar wood inserts to lids so they fit well.
