RUSSIAN BEAR FOSSILS
Ursus Uralensis, or U. Uralensis
Beware
of so-called "Russian" or "Siberia" "CAVE
BEAR" fossils being offered by other fossil dealers that have not
taken the time to educate themselves and know their product. These
are not true "cave" bear fossils (though these are genuine
fossils), as they are not a year-round cave dwelling bear. The cave
bear is much larger (SEE BELOW--the Ural Spelaeus)
From the last Ice Age, (Pleistocene)
40-60,000
year old deposits from the Ural Mountain region from SIBERIA, RUSSIA

Above
photos show how big the prehistoric Bear really was! Photos
taken at the Aurora Fossil Club show Russian
bears were larger than present-day grizzlies. Their diet was mostly vegetarian,
but they also may have eaten meat when easily available. They
hibernated in caves (but did not live year-long in caves), where many of them died and their bones are found
today. These are not cave bears. |
