Here's one of the interesting stories:

According to Arthur Ahkinga, who lived on Little Diomede island at the turn of the 1940s, the Iñupiat on the island made their living by hunting and carving ivory which they traded or sold. Fish they caught were bullheadstomcodsbluecods and a few others, although the fishing was not so common. During the winter time they used fur parkas and skinmukluks made out of hunted animals to protect themselves from cold and wind. Recreations were skating, snowshoeing, handball, football and Inuit dancing. After dark, people spent the rest of the evening telling jokes and old-time stories. In summer time they travelled with skin boats equipped with outboard motors to either Siberia or Wales, Alaska. Winter travel was limited to neighboring Big Diomede due to weather conditions. Between July and October half the population went to Nome for selling their carving and skin sewing and trading for supplies.[9]

Despite being separated by the new border after the Alaska purchase in 1867, Big Diomede had been home to families now living on Little Diomede and the people living on the American side of the border were very close relatives to those living on the Russian side. The communities on both islands were separated by politics, but connected by family kinships. Despite being officially forbidden, the Eskimos from both islands occasionally visited their neighbors, sometimes under the cover of fog, to meet their relatives and exchange small gifts. The local schoolteachers on Little Diomede counted that 178 people from Big Diomede and the Siberian mainland visited the island only within six months between January and July in 1944.[3]

At the beginning of the Cold War in the late 1940s Big Diomede became a Russian military base and all its native residents were removed to mainland Russia.[3] When people from Little Diomede went too close to the Russian side or tried to visit their relatives on the neighboring island during World War II, they were taken captive. According to one of the survivors, Oscar Ahkinga, after 52 days of internment and interrogation, the Iñupiat were banished and told not to come back.[10]

BALEEN BLADE

Hand made by Alaskan Native Aningayou of Gambell, St. Lawrence Island

What is baleen?  It is the strips that hang down in the baleen whale's mouth like in a car wash that catch the plankton that sticks to the hair along the strips of baleen, which it then swallows.  Baleen is made of Keratin (the same material our FINGERNAILS are made of).  Is that unusual enough of a knife for you?

Remember this is an Alaskan Native product which means the whale is caught for subsistence purposes, and as much of the whale is used as humanly possible, the rest is returned to the sea.

Made of genuine FOSSIL (extinct) STELLAR SEA COW BONE (relative of the Manatee)  (handle) and WHALE BALEEN (blade), average 7-1/4 to 8" long. Some handles are smooth, some are ridged.  For decorative or display item, not recommended to be used as a letter opener.

SPIRIT MASK.

Measures 12-1/2" diameter x 1-1/2" thick.

Wall hanging.

Mask itself is carved of wood with a center section of Canadian soapstone; two rings are wood.  Kayak oar is whale baleen, harpoon is whale baleen & string ; spirit animals around edges are a green/orange Canadian soapstone; walrus tusks are baleen; feathers (Arctic spruce hen).

Signed Lenwood Saccheus, Elim AK "94"

This is a replica of the Eskimo ceremonial mask used in ceremonies and dances.  All dances & ceremonies were held in a central building called "Gut".

The mask is the Spirit Center that calls all our animals to us.  We get the most and largest of animals.

The inner circle represents the Earth, the outer circle the Heavens.

The paddle represents our transportation & the harpoon is used to hunt some of the animals shown here - whale, walrus, seal, fish.

One piece represents the seal flippers, these are delicacies which were used and eaten by the elders, even in today's day and age.  The other flipper is whale, for elders - the easiest part to chew.

One is a walrus stomach flotation with walrus hide line attached to float from harpoon.

The feathers are used to decorate the masks.  These feathers were put in the seal breathing holes on the ice.  When the feathers move, this indicates that there is a seal emerging to surface, then is when to plunge the harpoon for the seal catch.

Item comes with signed paper with descriptions from artist.
